Common Scams in India 🚫

Online Phishing Scams

Fraudsters send deceptive emails or messages pretending to be from legitimate organizations (banks, government agencies, popular services) to trick you into revealing personal information like passwords, credit card details, or OTPs. Always verify the sender's email address and look for suspicious links.

Tech Support Scams

You might receive a pop-up warning on your computer or a call claiming to be from a reputable tech company (like Microsoft or Apple), stating your computer has a virus. They then try to convince you to pay for unnecessary services or grant remote access to your device, often installing malware.

Lottery & Prize Scams

You receive a notification that you've won a large sum of money in a lottery or sweepstakes you never entered. To claim the prize, you're asked to pay a "processing fee" or "tax." This is a classic advance-fee fraud; legitimate lotteries do not ask for money to release winnings.

Job & Employment Scams

Scammers lure job seekers with fake job offers, often from well-known companies, and then demand money for "training," "background checks," or "visa processing." Always be suspicious of job offers that require upfront payments or seem too good to be true.

Investment & Cryptocurrency Scams

These scams promise high returns with little to no risk, often involving fake cryptocurrency platforms or investment schemes. They might use social media or dating apps to build trust before convincing you to invest. Always research investment opportunities thoroughly and consult financial advisors.

Loan & Advance-Fee Scams

Victims are offered easy loans with low interest rates but are required to pay an upfront fee (e.g., "processing fee," "insurance," or "tax") before receiving the loan. Once the fee is paid, the scammer disappears, and no loan is provided.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams ✅

  • Verify Sender Identity: Always double-check the sender's email address, phone number, or website URL. Look for inconsistencies or typos.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Offers: If an offer seems too good to be true (e.g., lottery winnings, huge discounts, easy loans), it probably is.
  • Never Share OTPs/PINs: Banks and legitimate organizations will never ask for your One-Time Passwords (OTPs), PINs, or full credit card numbers over the phone or email.
  • Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Create complex passwords for different accounts and consider using a password manager.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security to your accounts wherever possible.
  • Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links: Do not click on links in unexpected emails or messages. Instead, type the official website address directly into your browser.
  • Regularly Monitor Accounts: Check your bank statements and credit reports regularly for any unauthorized transactions.
  • Educate Yourself: Stay updated on the latest scam trends by visiting reputable sources like our Fraud Alert page.

Reporting a Fraud 📞

If you have been a victim of fraud or suspect fraudulent activity, it is crucial to report it immediately to the relevant authorities. Prompt reporting increases the chances of recovering lost funds and helps in preventing others from falling victim to the same scam.

  • National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: For cybercrime related frauds, report online at cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Helpline Number: You can also call the National Cybercrime Helpline Number: 1930.
  • Bank/Financial Institution: Immediately contact your bank or financial institution to report any unauthorized transactions and block your cards.
  • Local Police: File a formal complaint with your local police station for severe cases or if advised by other authorities.

Remember to gather all relevant information, such as transaction details, scammer's contact information, screenshots, and communication records, before reporting.
